BIODATA – DATUK DR. TANG CHAI YOONG
Datuk Dr Tang is a well-known corporate figure in the fields of development, construction, and education. He is the Executive Chairman of the Niaga Group , comprising of seven companies, namely Putra International College, a private college located in Ayer Keroh, Melaka; five development and construction companies in Malaysia, and one commercial business in India.
Besides being a successful entrepreneur, Datuk Dr Tang is also a generous philanthropist. Among the non-governmental organizations he is affiliated with, is the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hainan Association, which he served for the last 18 years. He is also the current President of this huge organisation. Testimony to his leadership attributes he is also the President of, both, the Mazu Culture Exchange Association in Hainan, China, and the Kwong Tong Cemetery association in Kuala Lumpur. In addition he holds the esteem position of Chairman of the Board of Directors for SJKC Chiao Nan school in Kuala Lumpur and is a Council Member of Hainan University in China.
Apart from various recognitions over the years, Datuk Dr Tang has also received several awards from the United States. In 2007, he was conferred the prestigious Honorary Doctorate degree from Troy University, Alabama, USA. In the same year, both, Dr Tang and his wife were awarded the honorary citizenship from the state of Alabama in the United States for their contribution towards higher education, and commendable relationship with the United States. In 2014, Datuk Dr Tang received an additional honorary citizenship from Angola, United States which is a testimony of his standing and integrity internationally.
As an entrepreneur, Datuk Dr Tang is involved in various building and development projects in Malaysia and India. One of the current projects his group is working on is the Perbadanan PR1MA residential project, where his company is the turnkey contractor to build 695 units of terrace houses in Lumut, Negeri Sembilan.
Datuk Dr Tang's development and construction companies have also been involved in other projects such as the construction of three-storey terrace houses in Kuala Selangor and the development of serviced-apartments in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan. One of his companies, Platinum Oasis Global Sdn Bhd owns 5 food court lots in a food court located in Taman Jasmin Lagenda, Mantin.
Apart from being involved in development within Malaysia, Datuk Dr Tang's business acumen has led him to look farther afield to India. In his efforts to penetrate the construction in India, Datuk Dr Tang, through his company Platinum Engineering Construction Group Pvt Ltd, has embarked in a commercial development in Calicut, Kerala. This project involves the construction of a four-storey shopping complex and two high-rise apartment buildings.
As one that has contributed much to society, Datuk Dr Tang's greatest contribution is towards education. He is the founder and President of Putra International College. The college was established in 1999, and is operating in a former 4-star international resort within a campus compound of 4.9 acres in Ayer Keroh, Malacca. The college offers a variety of academic programmes ranging from Certificate level to Bachelor’s degree in the fields of Business Administration, Accountancy, Finance, Visual Arts, Information Technology, Hotel Management, Tourism Management and one English language course, IELTS. Putra International College has several international collaboration and partnerships such as Trine University, USA, Changchun College of Finance in China, and Jiangxi Vocational College of Mechanical and Electrical Technology. The college has recently been awarded a 5-star excellence rating from the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.
